Dental Assistant Job Summary
The primary objective of a dental assistant is to enhance the efficiency of the dental practice while providing high-quality, compassionate care. You will prepare treatment rooms, assist with various clinical procedures, handle sterilization, and educate patients on proper oral hygiene. A successful candidate is well-organized, detail-oriented, and possesses strong interpersonal skills.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
Clinical Support
- Chairside Assistance: Supporting dentists during examinations and procedures (e.g., fillings, extractions, root canals) by passing instruments and managing suction.
- Radiography: Taking and developing digital or traditional X-rays as directed by the dentist.
- Patient Preparation: Greeting patients, seating them comfortably, and preparing them for their appointments.
- Clinical Procedures: Taking impressions for crowns or dentures and applying topical anesthetics if permitted by state law.
Sterilization and Maintenance
- Infection Control: Adhering to strict sterilization and disinfection protocols for instruments and treatment rooms in compliance with OSHA and HIPAA regulations.
- Equipment Care: Maintaining and troubleshooting dental equipment and ensuring all necessary supplies are ready for use.
- Inventory Management: Monitoring stock levels and ordering dental supplies as needed.
Administrative and Educational Tasks
- Patient Education: Instructing patients on proper oral hygiene techniques and providing post-operative care instructions.
- Record Keeping: Maintaining accurate and confidential patient records, including medical history and treatment notes, often using software like Dentrix or Open Dental.
- Office Coordination: Managing the front desk by answering phones, scheduling appointments, and handling billing or insurance claims.
Job Requirements and Skills
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent is required. Graduation from an accredited dental assisting program is highly preferred.
- Certifications:Current CPR and BLS (Basic Life Support) certification.Dental X-ray/Radiology certification is often mandatory.State-specific licensure or registration (e.g., Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) or Registered Dental Assistant (RDA)).
- Technical Skills: Proficient knowledge of dental terminology, instruments, and materials.
- Soft Skills:Communication: Ability to clearly and compassionately interact with patients and the dental team.Attention to Detail: Precision in sterilization, record keeping, and assisting with intricate procedures.Manual Dexterity: Fine motor skills required to handle small instruments and work in confined spaces.
- Physical Demands: Capability to stand for long periods and lift up to 25 pounds occasionally.
