Job Overview

The Polymer Technologist is responsible for leading and supporting laboratory operations related to polymer materials. This role involves overseeing, designing and executing specialised tests, managing lab resources, and contributing to the research & development and quality assurance of polymer products. The position is ideal for candidates with hands-on experience in polymer science, laboratory safety, and technical innovation.


Key Responsibilities

  • Design and execute laboratory testing in accordance with established procedures, focusing on both existing polymer samples and the research & development of new formulations.
  • Identify and source new polymer raw materials, additives, fillers and specialty ingredients from local and international suppliers to support R&D, formulation improvements, product performance, sustainability and cost optimisation. Coordinate supplier samples, technical data and regulatory documentation for laboratory evaluation and material qualification.
  • Manage laboratory inventory, maintain accurate daily logs and ensure proper handling and storage of polymer materials.
  • Provide technical support and update laboratory data with the latest scientific and technical developments in polymer science.
  • Perform regular quality assessments on incoming polymer materials, identifying and resolving quality-related issues efficiently.
  • Assist in developing and reviewing laboratory work procedures and risk assessments, ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards.
  • Conduct comprehensive physical, thermal, and chemical analyses of polymers, including Melt Flow Index (MFI), moisture content, specific gravity, Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR).
  • Operate production-scale equipment such as Banbury mixers, pelletizers, and wire extruders for polymer compounding and granulation.
  • Assist with compliance testing and analytical activities to evaluate polymer products available in the market.
  • Maintain laboratory safety standards and ensure adherence to Quality, Health, and Safety management systems.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor in Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science, Materials Science, Applied Sciences, or a related discipline.
  • 2 years of prior experience in a laboratory setting, preferably with a focus on polymers.
  • Strong knowledge of laboratory safety standards, quality management systems, and polymer testing protocols.
  • Proficiency with laboratory equipment and related software (e.g., Microsoft Office, data analysis tools).
  • Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to work independently or collaboratively.
  • Effective communication skills and a willingness to learn and adapt to new techniques in polymer technology.
