Overview
Bhaskar’s Arts Academy (BAA), a leading institution for Indian classical performing arts in Singapore, is seeking a dedicated and experienced Mridangam Teacher to join our faculty. The role encompasses teaching, performance, and administrative responsibilities, contributing to both the educational and artistic excellence of the institution. The ideal candidate is passionate about Carnatic music, committed to nurturing students, and open to collaborative and cross-cultural artistic practices.
Key Responsibilities
Teaching
- Deliver structured Mridangam lessons in both individual and group settings
- Design and implement lesson plans aligned with the institution’s curriculum
- Teach foundational and advanced techniques, including hand positioning, stroke vocabulary (solkattu), and rhythmic structures
- Train students in accompaniment for vocal and instrumental Carnatic performances
- Prepare students for stage performances, examinations, and certification programmes
- Cultivate discipline, consistent practice habits, and a strong grounding in tala and laya
- Monitor and assess student progress, providing constructive and regular feedback
- Initiate and support new programmes and engagement strategies to enhance student retention and interest
Performance & Artistic Engagement
- Participate in concerts, recitals, institutional showcases, and outreach events
- Support and accompany dance and music productions where required
- Contribute to rehearsals, ensemble work, and interdisciplinary collaborations
- Engage in cross-cultural projects and creative initiatives within the academy
- Collaborate with faculty and administrative staff on interdisciplinary projects
Administrative / Collaborative
- Maintain accurate records of student attendance, assessments, and progress
- Conduct and grade examinations, ensuring proper documentation
- Liaise with parents on student progress, scheduling, and upcoming activities
- Coordinate performance logistics, including rehearsals, schedules, and communication with parents and students
- Assist in the planning and execution of concerts, examinations, and outreach programmes
- Participate in outreach, workshops, and community engagement initiatives
- Attend monthly meetings and contribute to institutional planning
REQUIREMENTS
- Strong training and proficiency in Mridangam and Carnatic music
- Prior teaching experience preferred, particularly with children and youth
- Ability to accompany vocal, instrumental, and dance performances
- Good organisational and communication skills
- A collaborative mindset and openness to interdisciplinary and cross-cultural work
- Commitment to the artistic and educational mission of the academy
