Head Vet / Medical Director
About this job
The Pet Physician - A family veterinary practice
Lead the medicine| Protect the relationships| Build the kind of practice families grow old with
A Family Vet as someone who knows not merely a patient's medical conditions, but how they walk, eat and behave, and recognises when something simply feels wrong.
Our Head Vet / Medical Director will be responsible for protecting and strengthening that culture.
The Pet Physician is seeking an experienced Head Veterinarian / Medical Director to lead the clinical development of our family veterinary practice.
This is a senior clinical leadership appointment, but it is not a position for someone who wants to practise veterinary medicine principally from an office. Our Head Veterinarian should still be somebody's family vet.
You will maintain your own clinical relationships and caseload while providing the leadership, mentorship and clinical governance necessary to help our veterinary team practise excellent medicine consistently.
YOUR ROLE
We are looking for a veterinarian with substantial small-animal experience and demonstrable clinical strength in general practice, preventive medicine, internal medicine, chronic disease management, diagnostic work-ups, dentistry, surgery and emergency presentations, together with the maturity and emotional intelligence required to lead other clinicians.
You should be someone other veterinarians naturally seek out when they need a second pair of eyes. You will provide senior clinical leadership across
We want someone with sufficient clinical depth to support another veterinarian when a straightforward consultation becomes challenging.
You should be able to review a complicated history, interrogate the diagnostics, help refine differentials and guide a rational treatment plan.
Likewise, you should bring strong surgical judgement and capability, supporting good case selection, perioperative decision-making, surgical standards and the development of younger clinicians' surgical confidence.
You will reinforce a culture where our veterinarians:
- build their own enduring relationships with patients and families;
- take responsibility for continuity and follow-through;
- know their regular patients beyond diagnoses and problem lists;
- recognise temperament, preferences, routines and behavioural changes as meaningful parts of the clinical picture;
- listen patiently when an owner says something has changed, even when the abnormality is initially difficult to quantify;
- take time to understand what families expect and hope to achieve;
- explain rather than dictate;
- provide preventive care with the same seriousness afforded to illness;
- communicate openly when expectations and medical reality differ; and
- know when to investigate, when to operate, when to refer, and when reassurance is genuinely enough.
WHAT WE OFFER
Our clinic is supported by in-house IDEXX diagnostics, digital radiography and dental radiography, ultrasound, iM3 dentistry, tonometry, dedicated canine and feline hospital wards, surgical facilities, VIN access and access to visiting imaging and specialist support.
A four-day work week with 1 weekend, competitive directorship remuneration, CPE support and genuine opportunities for continuing professional development are part of the existing employment proposition.
More importantly, you will join a practice where stakeholders and owners are trusted to ensure effective operations for you and your medical team to practise medicine thoughtfully and certainly, contribute ideas and help shape how the practice continues to develop.
If this sounds like the kind of medicine you would like to practise, we would very much like to meet you. Please reach us at [email protected]
