Power Electronics Control Engineer II
About this job
CompanyOverview
Amperesand is reinventing how the world powers its most critical systems.
We are facing a once-in-a-generation opportunity for infrastructure disruption. Electricity demand is skyrocketing, driven by AI factories, electric vehicles, and modern industrial growth. Energy supply is shifting to incorporate a more diverse mix of resources – including solar, gas, and batteries – at a massive scale.
And yet the power infrastructure behind our latest mega-projects hasn’t meaningfully changed in nearly 100 years. Supply chains for today’s infrastructure equipment can’t match the pace and sophistication of critical energy projects. Amperesand is building hardware and software that rewrites this broken power infrastructure playbook to support a new era of energy abundance.
We’ve built a new class of intelligent, software-defined power infrastructure products leveraging a decade of advanced medium voltage SolidState Transformer research that’s now ready for commercial deployment.
Our products and solutions go far beyond the capabilities of traditional electrical equipment. We make power systems that are faster to deploy, dramatically smaller and more efficient, and capable of supporting modern, dynamic energy needs for tomorrow’s most demanding energy consumers.
Scalable in-house advanced manufacturing capability is our foundation for meeting timeline and quality expectation to serve infrastructure customers around the world.
Amperesand is led by breakthrough energy hardware development veterans and funded by top tier investors who share our vision of building a category-defining energy technology company.
With hubs in San Francisco, Reno, and Singapore, our global team is laser focused on building foundational technology to solve the most pressing problems in power infrastructure at scale.
Join us in building the power foundation of the future!
Role Summary
As a Power Electronics Control Engineer (Level 2), you will contribute to the control and system-level design and validation of advanced power converters, including AC-DC and DC-DC topologies, used across low-voltage and medium-voltage power conversion systems. You will work under the guidance of senior engineers on control design, modeling, analysis, laboratory debugging, and validation, building toward greater ownership of control subsystems as you grow in the role. This is a great fit for an engineer with strong technical background, hands-on foundational experience - such as through an internship or early industry work -who is ready to take on defined technical scope with increasing independence, and collaborate closely with hardware, firmware, and system architect engineers to bring power electronics solutions from concept through validation.
Responsibilities:
• Design, simulate, and implement digital control algorithms for AC-DC and DC-DC power converters, under the guidance of senior engineers, across low- and medium-voltage applications.
• Develop small-signal and large-signal models to support stability analysis, loop compensation, and transient optimization.
• Support control strategy development for power conversion stages, including exposure to multilevel or resonant topologies and AC-DC / DC-DC stage interactions.
• Implement and validate real-time control algorithms on DSP/MCU/SoC platforms.
• Conduct hands-on debugging and root-cause analysis across simulation, firmware integration, hardware bring-up, and lab testing, escalating complex issues to senior engineers as needed.
• Develop SST models in MATLAB Simulink, PSCAD,PSS/E, and ETAP.
• Take ownership of well-defined control tasks and subsystems, with a growth path toward broader technical ownership.
Qualifications:
• Bachelor's,Master's degree, or equivalent industry/internship experience in ElectricalEngineering or a closely related field, with a focus on power electronics and control systems.
• 0-2 years of experience designing or supporting digital control for power converters(internship, co-op, or academic project experience counts).
• Foundational understanding of control theory, including loop compensation, stability margins, and frequency-domain and time-domain analysis.
• Some exposure to resonant power conversion principles across isolated and non-isolated power converter architectures.
• Experience implementing or testing real-time control algorithms on embedded platforms.
• Hands-on laboratory experience debugging power converters, gained through internship, coursework, or project work.
• Ability to translate theoretical control concepts into practical implementations, with support from senior engineers.
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with eagerness to work through technically ambiguous challenges.
• Familiarity with modeling and simulation tools such as MATLAB/Simulink and PLECS.
• Working proficiency in embedded C for real-time control implementation and debugging.
• Experience working with MATLAB Simulink, PSCAD, PSS/E, and ETAP.
BonusQualifications:
• Exposure to medium-voltage power electronics systems.
• Exposure to bidirectional power conversion and power flow control.
• Experience supporting products from R&D through validation, gained through internship or academic project work.
Please note: This role requires working on-site 5 days a week. We do not offer hybrid or remote options.
Onsite Collaboration Rationale:
Given the highly collaborative and cross-functional nature of hardware, embedded systems, and product development, in-person partnership across engineering and product teams is critical to enabling rapid execution, technical alignment, and successful development outcomes.
Why Join Amperesand
- Work on next-generation power infrastructure systems
- High ownership and visibility
- Cross-functional collaboration
- Opportunity to shape future products and infrastructure
- Fast-moving startup environment
