TECHNICAL SUPERINTENDENT – TANKER

Position Summary

The Technical Superintendent is responsible for the technical management, maintenance, reliability and seaworthiness of assigned tanker vessels, ensuring that each vessel remains fit for purpose, class compliant and operationally reliable.

The position will work closely with the vessel's Master, Chief Engineer, Class, Flag State, shipyards and technical contractors.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Take overall responsibility for the technical management of assigned tanker vessels, ensuring safe, reliable and efficient operation.
  2. Ensure vessels remain in compliance with Class, Flag State, SOLAS, MARPOL, MPA Singapore and applicable statutory requirements.
  3. Monitor and control the vessel's planned maintenance system (PMS) and ensure critical machinery and equipment are properly maintained.
  4. Review and follow up maintenance of main engine, auxiliary engines, boilers, pumps, cargo pumps, inert gas systems, steering gear, generators and other critical equipment.
  5. Monitor the condition and reliability of cargo handling systems, cargo pipelines, valves, tank equipment and tanker-specific safety systems.
  6. Ensure timely completion of Class surveys, statutory surveys, inspections and recommendations, including proper close-out of deficiencies.
  7. Prepare and manage vessel dry-docking, special survey, intermediate survey and repair programs, including specification, budgeting and shipyard coordination.
  8. Review technical condition reports and recommend appropriate repairs, renewal, modification or replacement of equipment.
  9. Manage vessel technical budgets, including OPEX, maintenance, spare parts, repairs and dry-docking expenditure.
  10. Ensure availability and proper management of critical spares, consumables and technical stores, particularly for safety-critical and propulsion equipment.
  11. Investigate technical failures, machinery breakdowns and recurring defects and implement appropriate root-cause analysis and corrective actions.
  12. Coordinate with Class, Flag State, manufacturers, shipyards, workshops, service engineers and technical contractors.
  13. Monitor vessel performance, including fuel consumption, machinery performance, reliability, downtime and maintenance trends.
  14. Provide technical support during PSC inspections, MPA inspections, Class surveys, SIRE inspections and terminal inspections.
  15. Ensure that vessels are technically prepared and fit for intended bunker tanker operations, including ship-to-ship bunkering, cargo transfer, mooring and operation in Singapore port waters.

Key Qualifications

  • Chief Engineer's Certificate of Competency or equivalent engineering qualification preferred.
  • Minimum 5–8 years' experience in tanker ship management.
  • Previous experience as Technical Superintendent strongly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of tanker machinery and cargo systems.
  • Experience with dry-docking, Class surveys and major repairs.
  • Knowledge of ISM, SOLAS, MARPOL and MPA requirements.
  • Experience with PMS and vessel maintenance software.
  • Good budgeting and contractor-management skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capability.
