Principal Designer – Piping

Job Responsibilities

  • Lead Piping & Layout design activities and coordinate project-specific matters with the Piping Design Lead.
  • Follow client specifications and project procedures for Piping & Layout design.
  • Work with the Piping Design Lead to understand requirements, meet project demands, and prepare required reports.
  • Resolve technical issues promptly and escalate to the Piping Design Lead when required. Plan tasks and issue deliverables per company procedures.
  • Understand project workflows, provide timely input, and highlight technical challenges in advance.
  • Coordinate with other offices on multi-location projects, attend meetings, communicate effectively, and take on additional project roles when required.
  • Perform 3D modelling using E3D/PDMS for mechanical, safety, soft volumes, escape and transport routes, access and material handling routes, equipment, packages, piping, and pipe supports.
  • Perform piping and pipe support layout design and conduct internal/external 3D model reviews.
  • Prepare and check MTOs for piping bulk and tagged items.
  • Review vendor drawings for static/rotating equipment and packages, ensuring nozzle orientations, vessel cleats, and support requirements meet design requirements.
  • Perform regular model clash checks and coordinate with other disciplines to maintain a clash-free 3D model.
  • Conduct design reviews using E3D/PDMS/Navisworks to ensure layout and piping designs comply with applicable standards and codes.
  • Issue discipline deliverables using project-specific templates.

Job Requirements

Work Experience

  • Minimum 15 years’ experience in an engineering environment for upstream offshore Oil & Gas projects, including experience as a Piping Principal/Lead Designer.
  • Experience with E3D/PDMS, MDS, Navisworks, AutoCAD, and MS Office.
  • Experience in Norwegian projects and relevant NCS/UKCS standards preferred.
  • Experience in medium/large brownfield and greenfield Oil & Gas projects, with strong understanding of project phases, milestones, and deliverables.

Qualifications

  • Degree/Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, ITE in Mechanical Engineering, or ITI/NTC in Mechanical Drafting.

Other Skills

  • Experience in E3D/PDMS 3D modelling and piping/pipe support layout design.
  • Strong knowledge of Oil & Gas industry standards, including ASME, API, BS, European Regulations, and other relevant standards/guidelines.
  • Strong written and verbal technical communication skills, including presenting technical matters to design teams, client technical authorities, project management representatives, and approving bodies.
  • Able to work with minimal supervision, make sound decisions, analyse problems, and provide focused solutions.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively at all organisational levels.
