Turn market movements into real business decisions.
This role sits close to the action, helping Aster interpret oil market developments, understand price exposure and identify opportunities to optimise value across its integrated petrochemical complex.

Job Summary
Aster is seeking a Market & Risk Analyst to join the Economics & Scheduling team within the Planning & Optimization division. In this role, you will analyse oil market trends, pricing movements and risk exposures, and translate market developments into insights that support commercial, optimisation and hedging-related decisions for Aster’s integrated petrochemical complex.

The Economics & Scheduling team is responsible for supporting the optimisation of hydrocarbon production across the Bukom integrated petrochemical complex. This includes crude and feedstock valuation, refinery and petrochemical integration, process unit target setting, product blending and sales optimisation. The team plays a key role in maximising integrated site margin across the different lines of business.

This opportunity is suited for someone with a strong foundation in oil markets, commodities, trading analytics or price risk management, and who is looking to deepen their exposure to integrated refinery economics and commercial optimisation. You will work with experienced stakeholders across the business and play a meaningful role in turning market signals into practical recommendations.

Why This Role

  • Work closely with Commercial, Planning, Operations and Finance teams to support decisions that drive margin and value.
  • Deepen your exposure to oil market intelligence, pricing benchmarks, refinery economics and hedging-related analysis.
  • Use market fundamentals, data and business context to shape practical recommendations in a fast-moving environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor and analyse short to mid-term oil market developments, including crude, refinery products, base oils and bitumen, with a focus on supply and demand balances, trade flows, outages, new capacity and macroeconomic drivers.
  • Prepare market updates, analysis reports, dashboards and visualisations to translate market developments into clear insights for the Planning & Optimization team and other business stakeholders.
  • Support Commercial and Operational decision-making by linking market fundamentals to refinery economics, margin optimisation opportunities and product value drivers.
  • Track Aster’s pricing and risk exposures across relevant physical and derivative positions, ensuring timely visibility of key exposure movements and market risks.
  • Provide analytical support for hedging recommendations and hedge execution activities in line with Aster’s hedging policy and governance requirements.
  • Maintain pricing data, market benchmarks and analytical tools using sources such as Platts, ICIS, Argus and ICE, while supporting data accuracy and connectivity with relevant internal systems.
  • Engage with internal stakeholders and, where relevant, external market participants, consultants, banks and counterparties to gather market intelligence and strengthen price risk management insights.
  • Support performance lookbacks and post-decision reviews to assess the impact of market movements, pricing decisions and optimisation strategies.

Required Qualifications

  • Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Business, Economics, Statistics, Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Relevant experience in oil markets, petroleum products, refinery economics, trading analytics, commercial optimisation or price risk management, with approximately 5 years of experience preferred.
  • Good understanding of oil market fundamentals, including supply and demand balances, trade flows, macroeconomic drivers and pricing benchmarks.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and visualisation tools such as Excel, Power BI or similar platforms.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex findings clearly and translate them into practical business insights.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with stakeholders across other Departments and external market-facing teams.
  • Exposure to refinery economics, integrated petrochemical operations, oil benchmarks, price reporting agencies, commodity markets, derivatives, hedging concepts, ETRM systems, SAP or related data platforms would be advantageous.

Hiring for this role will be based on candidates’ skills, experience, qualifications and ability to perform the role.

Work Location: This role offers exposure across both our corporate office at mTower and operational site at Pulau Bukom.

We thank all applicants for their interest in Aster Chemicals and Energy. Please note that only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.
