The Opportunity

Vertical Institute is looking for a Software Engineer to join our lean, high-output engineering team and help build and maintain the systems that power our learning platform and internal operations.

This is a hands-on engineering role where you will write production code, contribute to system design, build integrations, and develop internal tools and automations that improve how the business operates.

You will work closely with the engineering team and cross-functional stakeholders across admissions, sales, finance, and operations to turn business requirements into reliable technical solutions.

We are looking for someone who enjoys solving practical problems, takes ownership of their work, and can move quickly without compromising code quality or maintainability.

What You Will Own

1. Software Development

• Core Systems: Build, enhance, and maintain the core learning platform and web applications.

• Feature Development: Translate business and product requirements into well-designed, scalable software.

• Code Quality: Write clean, maintainable, and well-tested code following engineering best practices.

• Bug Fixes & Optimisation: Troubleshoot production issues, improve system performance, and continuously enhance existing features.

2. System Design & Integrations

• Backend & APIs: Develop and maintain APIs, databases, and backend services.

• SaaS Integrations: Integrate and maintain connections with LMS, CRM, payment systems, analytics platforms, and other third-party tools.

• Internal Tools: Build internal applications and automations that streamline workflows across sales, admissions, finance, and operations.

• Reliability: Contribute to system security, reliability, monitoring, and overall application performance.

3. AI & Automation

• AI Features: Explore and implement practical AI capabilities that improve products and business workflows.

• AI Integrations: Work with modern AI APIs, tools, and platforms to build useful features and automations.

• Process Automation: Identify repetitive manual processes and develop technical solutions to improve efficiency.

4. Engineering Practices

• Testing: Write and maintain appropriate automated tests to ensure software reliability.

• Code Reviews: Participate in code reviews and contribute to maintaining engineering standards.

• Documentation: Document technical solutions, APIs, systems, and processes where appropriate.

• CI/CD: Work with deployment and development workflows to support reliable and efficient releases.

5. Collaboration & Delivery

• Cross-functional Collaboration: Work with product, operations, admissions, sales, finance, and other stakeholders to understand requirements and deliver practical solutions.

• Problem Solving: Break down complex technical problems into manageable solutions.

• Agile Delivery: Ship improvements iteratively and respond quickly to changing business priorities.

• Technical Communication: Communicate technical issues, solutions, and trade-offs clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

What We Are Looking For

Essential Experience

• Software Engineering Experience: Proven experience building and maintaining production-grade web applications or software systems.

• Backend / Full-Stack Development: Strong experience in backend or full-stack software development.

• System Fundamentals: Solid understanding of databases, APIs, software architecture, and application performance.

• Production Experience: Experience working with live systems, debugging production issues, and delivering software reliably.

• Problem Solving: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a practical, solution-oriented mindset.

• Ownership: Able to take ownership of assigned projects and deliver with minimal supervision.

• Communication: Able to communicate technical concepts clearly and collaborate effectively with non-technical stakeholders.

Nice-to-Haves

• Ruby on Rails experience.

• Experience in EdTech or Learning Management Systems (LMS).

• Hands-on experience with AI APIs, LLMs, AI agents, or automation tools.

• Experience integrating CRM, payment, analytics, or other SaaS platforms.

• Experience with cloud platforms, CI/CD, and modern development workflows.

• Prior experience in a startup or scale-up environment.
