About the Role

Young Education is looking for a strong, engaging and academically rigorous Full-Time English / English Literature Teacher to join our academic team in Singapore.

The teacher will primarily work with secondary and high school students from international schools in Singapore, supporting them across English Language, English Literature, academic writing and examination preparation.

We are particularly looking for a teacher who can go beyond general English instruction and confidently teach students how to:

• analyse literary texts in depth;

• identify and explain language, imagery, structure, tone and authorial choices;

• construct strong analytical arguments;

• write high-quality literary and argumentative essays;

• respond effectively to unseen texts;

• develop sophisticated written expression.

The ideal candidate should be confident teaching students from lower secondary through IGCSE and IB Diploma level.

Key Responsibilities

Teaching

Teach English and English Literature to secondary and high school students across programmes including:

• Lower Secondary English

• Lower Secondary English Literature

• IGCSE English Language

• IGCSE English Literature

• IB MYP English / Language & Literature

• IB English A: Language and Literature

• IB English A: Literature

Experience teaching IB English A at SL and HL level is highly preferred.

Candidates who are also familiar with international-school entrance assessments, academic writing or interview preparation will have an additional advantage.

Literature & Textual Analysis

Support students in developing strong literary-analysis skills, including:

• close reading;

• annotation;

• analysis of language and literary devices;

• imagery and symbolism;

• characterisation;

• narrative voice;

• tone and atmosphere;

• structure and form;

• themes and motifs;

• authorial intention;

• contextual interpretation.

Guide students to move beyond identifying techniques and develop clear explanations of:

Technique → Evidence → Interpretation → Effect → Authorial Purpose

Teachers should be comfortable analysing a wide range of texts, including:

• poetry;

• drama;

• novels;

• short stories;

• speeches;

• articles;

• advertisements;

• visual and multimodal texts;

• unseen literary and non-literary texts.

Essay Writing

Teach students how to plan, structure and develop high-level academic responses.

Key areas include:

• thesis development;

• topic sentences;

• paragraph structure;

• evidence selection;

• quotation integration;

• close textual analysis;

• comparative analysis;

• critical interpretation;

• evaluation;

• introductions and conclusions;

• coherence and academic style.

Teachers should be able to provide detailed, actionable feedback on student writing, rather than only correcting grammar.

English Language

Support students in developing:

• argumentative writing;

• persuasive writing;

• discursive writing;

• descriptive writing;

• narrative writing;

• transactional writing;

• comprehension;

• summary skills;

• vocabulary;

• grammar and sentence control;

• clarity and sophistication of expression.

IB English

For IB students, the teacher may support areas including:

• Paper 1 textual analysis;

• Paper 2 comparative literary essays;

• Individual Oral preparation;

• literary and non-literary text analysis;

• development of global issues and lines of inquiry;

• analytical writing;

• examination strategy.

Familiarity with current IB English assessment criteria and marking standards is highly desirable.

Academic Support

• Assess students’ current reading, writing and analytical ability.

• Identify gaps in language, literary analysis and essay-writing skills.

• Develop personalised learning plans based on school curriculum and examination requirements.

• Track students’ progress over time.

• Prepare students for school assessments and external examinations.

• Provide clear academic feedback after lessons and assessments.

• Work with the academic team to develop targeted intervention plans for students who are falling behind.

Curriculum & Teaching Materials

• Develop lesson plans, worksheets, reading materials, essay questions and model responses.

• Create and organise literature-analysis resources.

• Develop writing frameworks and marking rubrics.

• Prepare examination practice and mock papers.

• Participate in the development of Young Education’s English curriculum and resource bank.

• Stay familiar with the curriculum and assessment requirements of major international examination boards.

Candidate Requirements

Essential

• Bachelor’s degree or above in one of the following or a related field:

  • English

  • English Literature

  • Comparative Literature

  • Linguistics

  • Education

  • Humanities

  • Communications

  • Law

  • another strongly writing- and analysis-based discipline

• Excellent command of spoken and written English.

• Strong academic writing ability.

• Able to analyse literary texts confidently and explain interpretations clearly.

• Able to teach essay structure and analytical writing systematically.

• Comfortable teaching teenagers across different ability levels.

• Patient, responsible and highly organised.

• Able to teach fully in English.

• Able to work full-time in Singapore.

Highly Preferred

• Experience teaching IGCSE English Language and/or English Literature.

• Experience teaching IB English A: Language & Literature / Literature.

• Experience teaching international-school students in Singapore.

• Familiarity with Cambridge, Edexcel or IB assessment criteria.

• Strong knowledge of literary-analysis frameworks and examination techniques.

• Experience marking and improving student essays.

• Experience teaching unseen poetry, prose and non-literary textual analysis.

• Familiarity with international schools in Singapore.

Bilingual English and Mandarin ability is highly preferred, particularly for communicating with Mandarin-speaking students and parents.

Candidates who completed part of their secondary or tertiary education in Singapore, or who have substantial experience studying, living or teaching in Singapore, are particularly welcome.
