What You’ll Be Doing
As a Scientist in System Architecture, you will be the system-level visionary for our FMCW LiDAR optical engines. You will translate product requirements into a cohesive architectural blueprint, defining how the silicon photonics core, the laser source, and the electronic processing chain interact to achieve long-range, high-precision sensing. You will bridge the gap between photonic device physics, hardware constraints, and end-user system performance.

Key Responsibilities
- System-Level Architecture & Link Budget: Ownership of the end-to-end FMCW LiDAR optical and electrical link budgets. Translate system specifications (range, resolution, frame rate) into explicit requirements for optics, PIC, lasers, and electronics.
- Performance Modeling & Simulation: Develop comprehensive mathematical and physical system models to simulate ranging performance, SNR, maximum detectable range, velocity ambiguity, and point-cloud density.
- Silicon Photonics Specification: Partner with PIC designers and laser experts to define photonic device specifications (laser linewidth, chirp linearity, optical insertion loss, photodetector responsivity, optical crosstalk).
- System Trade-off Analysis: Drive cross-functional trade-off decisions between laser sweep bandwidth, power budget, optical aperture size, dynamic range, and digital processing complexity.
- Next-Generation Architecture Exploration: Lead technical feasibility studies for next-generation FMCW concepts, evaluating emerging optical beam steering (e.g., OPA), advanced modulation schemes, and photonic integrated circuit architectures.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree or higher in Optical Engineering, Photonics, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related discipline.
- Experience: 3+ years of relevant experience in optical system engineering, LiDAR architecture, or coherent optical communication systems.
- Technical Expertise:
- Deep theoretical foundation in FMCW physics, optical coherence, laser phase noise, and detection theory.
- Strong working knowledge of Silicon Photonics (SiPh) component characteristics and limitations.
- Proven experience building system-level numerical models in Python or MATLAB.
- Hands-on experience with optical simulation tools (e.g., Lumerical, Zemax) is highly desirable.
- Soft Skills: Excellent analytical framing, strategic technical clarity, and the ability to articulate complex physical trade-offs to multidisciplinary engineering teams.
