Job Overview

GT Educational Institute is seeking an experienced bilingual History Tutor who is able to teach IGCSE and IB History in English while explaining key concepts, vocabulary, and difficult topics in Mandarin Chinese when required.

The successful candidate must be fluent and confident in communicating in both English and Mandarin Chinese, as some of our students are native Mandarin speakers studying History in English-medium international schools.

The tutor should not only have strong historical knowledge but also be able to develop students' source-analysis, critical-thinking, essay-writing, and examination skills.

Key Responsibilities

• Teach IGCSE and IB History according to the student's school curriculum and examination requirements.

• Conduct lessons primarily in English while using Mandarin Chinese to clarify difficult historical concepts, terminology, instructions, and examination requirements when necessary.

• Help students build appropriate English History vocabulary and academic writing skills.

• Explain historical events, causes, consequences, significance, change and continuity, and different historical perspectives.

• Teach students how to analyse and evaluate primary and secondary historical sources.

• Develop students' ability to assess source origin, purpose, value, limitations, reliability, and usefulness.

• Teach students to compare different historical perspectives and interpretations.

• Develop strong argumentative and evidence-based essay-writing skills.

• Teach thesis development, paragraph structure, use of historical evidence, evaluation, and effective conclusions.

• Prepare students for examinations using past papers and examination-style questions.

• Teach examination techniques, command terms, question analysis, and time management.

• Identify students' weaknesses and provide targeted support.

• Mark and provide constructive feedback on essays, source-based questions, homework, and practice papers.

• Monitor students' academic progress and provide lesson feedback when required.

IGCSE History

The tutor should be confident teaching:

• Historical knowledge and understanding

• Cause and consequence

• Change and continuity

• Similarity and difference

• Historical significance

• Source analysis and evaluation

• Structured and extended-response questions

• Evidence-based essay writing

• Past-paper and examination preparation

Experience with Cambridge IGCSE, Edexcel IGCSE, or equivalent international History curricula is preferred.

IB History

The tutor should be familiar with:

• Historical source analysis

• Historical perspectives and interpretations

• Comparative historical analysis

• Evidence-based argumentative essays

• IB command terms and assessment criteria

• Paper 1 – Source-based questions

• Paper 2 – Essay questions

• Paper 3 – HL History, where applicable

• Historical research and academic writing

• IB History Internal Assessment (IA) guidance

Any IA support must comply with IB academic-integrity requirements; the tutor should guide and provide feedback rather than complete assessed work for the student.

Requirements

Mandatory

• Bachelor's degree or above in History, Humanities, Education, or a closely related discipline.

• Bilingual proficiency in English and Mandarin Chinese.

• Must be able to teach History academically in English and explain difficult concepts effectively in Mandarin Chinese.

• Strong knowledge of History and historical research methods.

• Ability to teach IGCSE and/or IB History.

• Strong English academic writing and communication skills.

• Strong source-analysis and argumentative essay-writing skills.

• Ability to explain complex historical topics clearly.

• Patient, responsible, organised, and adaptable to different students' learning needs.

Preferred

• Previous teaching or tutoring experience in IGCSE and/or IB History.

• Experience with Cambridge, Edexcel, or IB curricula.

• Experience teaching students from international schools.

• Experience preparing students for IGCSE or IB examinations.

• Experience providing detailed feedback on History essays and source-based responses.

• Familiarity with IB History IA requirements.
