Role Overview

We are seeking a Commercial Executive to support the chartering and commercial management of a small shipowner’s tanker fleet.

The successful candidate will source cargo opportunities, prepare voyage estimates, negotiate fixtures and coordinate closely with the operations team throughout each voyage. This is a hands-on position offering broad exposure to both commercial decision-making and day-to-day tanker operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Source and evaluate suitable cargo opportunities for the tanker fleet.
  • Maintain regular contact with charterers, traders, brokers and other market participants.
  • Support the negotiation and conclusion of voyage charters, time charter trips and period fixtures.
  • Review Charter Party terms, conditions and rider clauses.
  • Prepare voyage estimates covering freight income, bunker costs, port expenses and expected returns.
  • Monitor vessel positions, cargo requirements, freight rates and tanker-market developments.
  • Prepare and circulate vessel-position lists and cargo updates.
  • Coordinate with the operations team following fixture confirmation.
  • Monitor voyage performance and ensure compliance with commercial terms.
  • Assist with bunker planning and voyage-cost optimisation.
  • Review laytime calculations and support demurrage and despatch claims.
  • Maintain accurate records of fixtures, voyage performance and commercial results.
  • Prepare market reports, voyage profit-and-loss summaries and management updates.
  • Identify and develop relationships with new charterers and commercial partners.
  • Resolve commercial and operational matters while protecting the shipowner’s interests.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Diploma or degree in Maritime Studies, Shipping, Business or a related discipline.
  • Two to five years of experience in tanker chartering, shipbroking, commercial operations or vessel operations.
  • Candidates from shipowners, operators, trading companies or tanker-broking firms may be considered.
  • Good understanding of tanker markets, Charter Parties and voyage calculations.
  • Experience with clean petroleum products, dirty petroleum products or chemical tankers would be advantageous.
  • Existing relationships with charterers, traders or brokers would be beneficial.
  • Strong commercial awareness, numerical ability and negotiation skills.
  • Able to work independently and take on broad responsibilities within a lean team.
  • Good organisational and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and relevant shipping or voyage-management systems.
  • Excellent written and spoken English.
