Job Description

The NUS Centre for Biomedical Ethics (CBmE) was established in September 2006 in the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine through a generous gift by the Chen Su Lan Trust. We work to develop understanding, capacity for good judgement, and sound ethical practice in the context of healthcare provision, biomedical science and health-related policy development. The CBmE is a thriving centre for learning, teaching and research relating to ethical and legal aspects of healthcare and biomedical sciences. We study issues of broad international significance with a particular interest in learning for and from Singapore and Asia.

We invite applications for one or more Research Fellow (postdoctoral researcher) positions based at the NUS Centre for Biomedical Ethics in Singapore. Candidates must be trained in empirical research (qualitative and/or quantitative), in addition to having a good grasp of biomedical ethics. They should be interested in working with, for, and on topics related to older persons. The research project seeks to explore and assess how the use of emerging technologies by older persons, and in the care of older persons, can be developed and scaled in an ethically and socially meaningful manner. The Research Fellow will work with Associate Professor Tenzin Wangmo and other members of the project team.

We are seeking experienced and motivated postdoctoral researchers with expertise in empirical research and ethical analysis, who are keen to contribute to research that leads to improvement of well-being of older persons, and are eager to develop empirical findings into high-quality publications and policy/practice-oriented outputs. This is an excellent opportunity for motivated postdoctoral researchers who want a good balance between independent and collaborative working styles and wish to thrive in an interdisciplinary environment.

Key responsibilities

• Carry out systematic reviews of literature or co-develop normative argumentative papers on the research topic
• Conduct and analyse qualitative and quantitative research, including interviews, focus groups, and surveys
• Integrate empirical data with practical ethical analysis
• Lead the drafting of manuscripts and reports
• Prepare applications for research ethics review, amendments, and progress reporting, as required
• Manage own research and administrative activities and coordinate multiple aspects of the work to meet internal deadlines
• Support the organisation of workshops and meetings

Qualifications

• PhD specialising in bioethics, or a discipline related to bioethics (e.g., Anthropology, law, sociology, psychology); applicants holding a professional degree in medicine or law must also possess a PhD, together with formal training and demonstrated research experience in bioethics, from a reputable university.
• Strong track record in empirical research
• Ability to integrate empirical work with ethical, legal, or policy analysis
• Excellent written and oral communication skills in English. Ability to speak any of the other national languages of Singapore is a plus
• Strong organisation and research management skills
• Ability to work both collaboratively and independently

Contract

This is a full-time appointment, expected to commence on 1 January 2027 or as mutually agreed. The initial appointment will be for two years, with the possibility of extension subject to satisfactory performance and funding availability, up to a maximum of four years.
