Locum Medical Technologist | Hematology

Responsibilities

• Perform a variety of laboratory test procedures, depending on the assigned section, in accordance with laboratory standards and with minimal direct supervision from senior staff.
• Perform routine sample processing, including centrifugation and aliquoting of patient samples.
• Conduct routine qualitative and quantitative chemical analyses on blood, CSF (cerebrospinal fluid), urine, stool, and other body fluids.
• Perform routine haematology procedures, including microscopy (blood films, microfilaria, malaria parasites, and reticulocytes), bone marrow assistance, slide staining, and stem cell thawing.
• Perform coagulation testing.
• Support blood transfusion services, including crossmatching, blood typing, antibody screening, unit typing, stock management, and transfusion reaction investigations.
• Support administrative duties, including patient sample registration, handling client telephone enquiries, printing and faxing patient results, result retrieval, and record/specimen management.
• Comply with and maintain all applicable laboratory safety regulations.
• Maintain appropriate inventory levels of clinical laboratory consumables and reagents.
• Review daily QC results and discuss any issues with senior staff.
• Monitor the performance of laboratory instruments and equipment and report any malfunctions or abnormalities.
• Comply with regulatory guidelines and participate in CAP proficiency testing programmes and hospital quality assurance programmes.
• Participate in routine instrument maintenance and ongoing continuing education and professional development programmes.
• Support flexible staffing requirements and participate in shift duties.
• Perform any other duties as assigned by the Clinical Supervisor from time to time.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology or a related field.
• 1–2 years of experience in haematology and blood bank testing is preferred but not mandatory.
• Knowledge of haematology and blood bank principles, practices, and procedures.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• High attention to detail with the ability to maintain accurate records.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work independently as well as effectively in a team.
