Job Description

ULC Academy is seeking experienced and passionate English Teachers for Children and Teenagers to join our academic team in Singapore.

This position focuses primarily on supporting international school students who wish to further strengthen their English proficiency beyond their regular school curriculum.

Students may come from different international and linguistic backgrounds and require targeted support in Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing, including academic vocabulary, reading comprehension, structured writing, oral communication and overall academic English proficiency.

Candidates with previous teaching experience in primary schools, secondary schools or international schools are strongly preferred.

We welcome applicants seeking Full-Time, Part-Time or Freelance teaching arrangements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Teach English to children and teenagers, primarily at primary and secondary school levels.
  • Support students currently studying in international schools in Singapore.
  • Deliver structured lessons covering the four core English skills: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing.
  • Identify individual students' strengths and weaknesses and provide targeted skill development.
  • Improve students' reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar and ability to understand increasingly complex texts.
  • Develop students' writing skills, including sentence structure, paragraph development, essays, reports and other age-appropriate academic writing.
  • Build students' speaking confidence, pronunciation, fluency, presentation and discussion skills.
  • Strengthen listening comprehension and students' ability to understand classroom instructions, discussions and academic content.
  • Help students develop the academic English skills required to perform more confidently in an international school environment.
  • Conduct placement assessments and identify appropriate learning levels and objectives.
  • Prepare and adapt lesson materials based on students' age, English proficiency and academic needs.
  • Track student progress and provide clear, constructive feedback.
  • Communicate with the academic team regarding students' learning progress and areas requiring additional support.
  • Conduct both small-group and one-to-one lessons when required.

Areas of Teaching

Depending on the teacher's experience and student needs, classes may include:

  • General English for Children & Teenagers
  • Academic English
  • Listening & Speaking Skills
  • Reading Comprehension
  • Writing Skills
  • Grammar & Vocabulary Development
  • Presentation & Communication Skills
  • School English Support
  • English Foundation for International School Students
  • Advanced English Development for High-Proficiency Students

Teachers who have experience with Cambridge, IB, IGCSE or other international school curricula are particularly welcome.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in English, Education, Linguistics or a related field is preferred.
  • Teaching qualifications such as PGCE, CELTA, TESOL, TEFL or equivalent are an advantage.
  • Previous teaching experience in a primary school, secondary school or international school is strongly preferred.
  • Experience teaching children and/or teenagers is required.
  • Experience working with students from international schools is highly desirable.
  • Strong understanding of age-appropriate English language development.
  • Ability to teach and improve all four English skills: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing.
  • Strong knowledge of English grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension and writing instruction.
  • Ability to identify students' individual learning gaps and provide targeted support.
  • Strong classroom management skills.
  • Patient, responsible and able to communicate effectively with young learners.
  • Comfortable teaching students from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
  • Experience teaching Japanese, Korean and Chinese international students is an advantage.
  • Experience with Cambridge, IB, IGCSE or other international curricula is an advantage.

Preferred Candidate Profile

We are particularly interested in teachers who have previously worked in a school environment and understand that English development for international school students goes beyond conversational English.

The ideal teacher should be able to identify whether a student is struggling with areas such as:

  • Limited academic vocabulary
  • Weak reading comprehension
  • Difficulty organising ideas in writing
  • Grammar and sentence structure
  • Lack of confidence in classroom discussions
  • Listening difficulties in an English-speaking school environment
  • Weak presentation or oral communication skills
  • Difficulty understanding academic texts
  • Difficulty expressing complex ideas clearly in English

Teachers should then be able to design targeted lessons to address these areas and help students make measurable progress.

Working Arrangements

We are open to:

Full-Time Teachers
For candidates who can take on a regular teaching schedule and larger student load.

Part-Time Teachers
For teachers who are available for regular weekday afternoon, evening and/or weekend classes.

Freelance Teachers
For experienced teachers who prefer flexible assignments based on student demand and availability.

As most students attend international schools during the day, teaching demand is generally higher during weekday afternoons, evenings and weekends.
