Software Engineer (Kotlin/Java)

Employment Type: Contract (1-year renewable with opportunities for conversion)

Salary: $11,000 + AWS

We are seeking an experienced Senior Software Engineer to lead the delivery of complex software projects while contributing to broader technical standards and reusable capabilities. The successful candidate will work independently, make pragmatic technical decisions and balance immediate delivery requirements with long-term system scalability and sustainability.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the end-to-end design, development and delivery of software applications with minimal supervision.
• Design scalable and maintainable solutions using modern software architecture and engineering practices.
• Support both greenfield development and the modernisation of existing or legacy systems.
• Evaluate technical options and make informed decisions based on timelines, costs, security, operational complexity and long-term sustainability.
• Identify technical dependencies, delivery risks and system constraints early in the project lifecycle.
• Develop reusable components, frameworks and implementation patterns that can support multiple products or teams.
• Establish and maintain coding standards, architectural documentation and technical procedures.
• Conduct code reviews and provide technical guidance and mentorship to other engineers.
• Implement DevOps practices covering automated testing, CI/CD, infrastructure as code, monitoring and observability.
• Troubleshoot complex application and performance issues by identifying and resolving their underlying causes.
• Collaborate with product managers, business stakeholders, architects, vendors and engineering teams to deliver business outcomes.
• Ensure applications comply with relevant security, governance and regulatory requirements.
• Manage technical debt and recommend suitable remediation or modernisation approaches.

Requirements

• Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related discipline.
• At least 5 years of software engineering experience, including the delivery of complex production systems.
• Strong hands-on experience in Java, Kotlin or comparable backend programming languages.
• Good knowledge of software architecture, system design, APIs, microservices and maintainable software development.
• Experience with cloud platforms, preferably AWS, and cloud-native application development.
• Familiarity with DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code and system observability.
