Part-Time Legal Advisor (NVOCC/Freight & Logistics)

Job Overview

We are looking for an experienced Part-Time Legal Adviser to provide practical legal support to our NVOCC and freight forwarding operations. The role will primarily focus on reviewing commercial and legal documents, advising on customer/agent claims, drafting agreements, and providing legal guidance to protect the company's interests.

The Legal Adviser will work closely with management and the operations/commercial teams to ensure that agreements, claims, and business arrangements are handled appropriately from a legal perspective.

Key Responsibilities

Legal Document & Contract Review

• Review contracts, agreements, terms and conditions, and other legal documents received from customers, agents, vendors, carriers, and business partners.
• Advise management on whether the terms are fair and reasonable to the company.
• Identify potential legal risks, liabilities, unfavorable clauses, and areas requiring clarification or negotiation.
• Provide practical recommendations to protect the company's interests.
• Review claims received from customers, agents, and other business partners, including supporting documents and correspondence.
• Assess the company's potential liability and provide legal advice on the appropriate response or action.
• Coordinate with relevant internal teams, agents, customers, and other parties on claims and dispute matters.
• Assist in preparing responses, settlement proposals, or other necessary legal correspondence.
• Advise management on potential risks and escalation requirements for more serious disputes.
• Draft and/or revise contracts, agreements, letters, notices, terms and conditions, and other legal documents as required.
• Assist in preparing standard templates for customer, agent, vendor, and business partner agreements.
• Ensure documents are clear, commercially practical, and adequately protect the company's interests.
• Provide ad-hoc legal advice relating to the company's NVOCC, freight forwarding, shipping, and logistics activities.
• Keep management informed of significant legal risks affecting business operations.
• Recommend when matters should be referred to external legal counsel or specialist lawyers.

Requirements

• Minimum 5 years of relevant legal experience, preferably with experience in shipping, maritime, logistics, freight forwarding, NVOCC, international trade, or commercial contracts.
• Good understanding of commercial contracts, liability, claims, and dispute resolution.
• Experience in reviewing and drafting commercial agreements and legal correspondence.
• Strong analytical and negotiation skills.
• Able to understand business requirements and provide practical, commercially sensible legal advice.
• Good communication skills and ability to coordinate with customers, agents, business partners, and internal teams.
• Able to work independently and provide support on a part-time/ad-hoc basis.

Candidates without direct NVOCC experience may also be considered if they have strong experience in legal advisory, insurance claims, commercial contracts, or dispute/claims handling.
