Job Summary
The Clinical Instructor is responsible for providing hands-on clinical teaching, bedside coaching and competency assessment to nursing and care staff across Ju Eng Home.
The role supports the Nurse Educator in ensuring that staff are able to translate policies, procedures and classroom learning into safe and consistent clinical practice.
The Clinical Instructor spends a significant proportion of time in the wards observing practice, coaching staff, conducting return demonstrations, assessing competencies and supporting staff who require additional clinical guidance or remediation.
The role also supports new staff orientation, preceptorship, clinical skills development and continuous improvement in nursing practice.
Key Responsibilities
1. Bedside Clinical Teaching
· Conduct hands-on clinical teaching and bedside coaching for nursing and care staff.
· Demonstrate correct clinical procedures and care techniques.
· Reinforce safe, appropriate and person-centred clinical practices.
· Observe staff practice and provide immediate constructive feedback.
· Support staff in applying classroom learning to actual resident care situations.
2. Clinical Competency Assessment
· Conduct competency assessments within approved scope and authority.
· Assess staff through direct observation, return demonstrations and practical evaluation.
· Ensure staff demonstrate the required knowledge, skill and safety standards before independent practice.
· Document competency assessment outcomes accurately.
· Identify staff requiring retraining, reassessment or closer supervision.
· Escalate significant competency concerns to the Nurse Educator and Nursing leadership.
3. New Staff Orientation &Preceptorship
· Support clinical orientation of newly recruited nurses and care staff.
· Provide practical ward-based induction and familiarisation.
· Guide new staff through required clinical competencies during onboarding.
· Work with preceptors and ward leaders to monitor staff progress.
· Identify new staff who require additional clinical support.
· Provide feedback on readiness for independent deployment.
4. Clinical Skills Training
· Conductor support practical clinical training in areas including, where applicable:
· Medication administration and safety
· Wound care
· Infection prevention and control
· Enteral feeding
· Catheter care
· Falls prevention
· Safe resident transfer and handling
· Vital signs and clinical observations
· Documentation and care planning
· Dementia care
· End-of-lifecare
· Emergency response
· Other nursing and care procedures relevant to JEH
· Assist in preparing simulation sessions and practical demonstrations.
5. Ward-Based Practice Observation
· Conduct regular ward rounds focused on clinical practice and learning needs.
· Observe whether approved SOPs and care standards are being applied correctly.
· Identify inconsistent practices, knowledge gaps or unsafe practices.
· Provide coaching and corrective guidance where appropriate.
· Report recurring or significant practice gaps to the Nurse Educator and Nursing leadership.
6. Remedial Training &Coaching
· Provide targeted coaching to staff with identified competency or performance gaps.
· Support remedial-training plans following incidents, audits or competency assessments.
· Conduct follow-up assessments after retraining.
· Document progress and outcomes.
· Work with Nurse Managers and Nursing Officers to ensure improvement is sustained.
7. Incident-Related Education
· Support clinical education arising from incidents, near misses, complaints and audit findings.
· Assist in identifying whether knowledge, skill or competency gaps contributed to an incident.
· Conduct targeted refresher training where required.
· Reinforce lessons learnt with relevant staff and wards.
· Support implementation of corrective and preventive actions related to training.
8. Preceptor & Clinical Coach Support
· Support the development of ward-based preceptors and clinical coaches.
· Guide preceptors on appropriate teaching, observation and feedback methods.
· Promote consistent competency assessment standards.
· Assist in monitoring the effectiveness of preceptorship arrangements.
9. Training Materials &Competency Tools
· Assist the Nurse Educator in developing and reviewing:
· Competency checklists
· Clinicals kills guides
· Practical training materials
· Quick-reference tools
· Ward-based learning resources
· Ensure clinical teaching materials are aligned with current approved policies andSOPs.
10. Documentation & TrainingRecords
· Maintain accurate records of competency assessments, bedside teaching and remedial training.
· Submit completed documentation promptly for updating of the central training and competency register.
· Ensure assessment documentation is clear, complete and audit-ready.
· Assist in monitoring outstanding clinical competencies.
11. Clinical Standards &Quality Improvement
· Promote consistent clinical standards across wards and shifts.
· Participate in clinical audits and quality-improvement initiatives.
· Support implementation of revised nursing policies, procedures and care standards.
· Work with QRM and Nursing leadership on clinical improvement activities where required.
· Provide feedback on areas where SOPs or workflows may require clarification or reinforcement.
12. Staff Development
· Identify staff with potential for further clinical development.
· Encourage staff to take responsibility for continuous learning.
· Provide practical coaching to strengthen clinical confidence and competence.
· Support development of junior nurses, care staff and new preceptors.
13. Education Programme Support
· Assistthe Nurse Educator in conducting scheduled training programmes.
· Supportpractical stations, simulations and competency workshops.
· Assistwith assessment of training effectiveness.
· Providefeedback on common learning gaps identified from ward observations.
Requirements
· Registered Nurse with the Singapore Nursing Board.
· Recognised nursing qualification.
· Preferably at least 4–5 years of relevant clinical nursing experience.
· Strong clinical foundation and ability to demonstrate safe nursing practices.
· Prior experience as a preceptor, clinical coach, trainer or Clinical Instructor would be advantageous.
· Experience in nursing homes, geriatrics, community care or long-term care would be advantageous.
· Strong communication, coaching and teaching skills.
· Able to provide constructive feedback professionally and confidently.
· Comfortable working directly with frontline staff across different wards and shifts.
Preferred Qualifications
· Degree in Nursing would be advantageous.
· Qualification in clinical teaching, adult education, preceptorship or workplace training would be an advantage.
· Certification in relevant clinical competencies or instructor programmes would be beneficial.
