Job Summary
The Mechanical Engineer supports the Engineering Lead and Product Engineering Manager by managing mechanical, structural, and piping scopes across design, construction, testing, installation, and commissioning phases for hyperscale data centers. The role ensures compliance with customer requirements and industrial standards while providing technical support during manufacturing and site operations.
Responsibilities
- Review and approve mechanical drawings and documentation to ensure compliance with industrial standards and codes for data center infrastructure modules
- Monitor engineering work to verify accuracy and adherence to client specifications, safety practices, and project requirements
- Lead and participate in design and development planning sessions to align with customer and industry needs
- Prepare technical requisitions for mechanical systems and components to support procurement and manufacturing
- Evaluate vendor quotations and provide detailed feedback to procurement teams
- Develop and complete mechanical engineering deliverables including valve lists, equipment lists, piping line lists, stress/flexibility studies, line sizing, and equipment datasheets
- Generate bulk Material Take Offs (MTOs) and detailed Bills of Materials (BOMs) for project execution
- Innovate cost-effective solutions while maintaining quality, schedule, and safety standards
- Stay informed on new developments in electrical engineering and data center technologies to recommend improvements for product reliability and efficiency
- Specify appropriate painting, coating, and piping insulation systems for data center components
- Determine mounting, fastening, and bolting requirements for mechanical equipment and components
- Advise project and discipline engineers on industry codes and client specifications for mechanical and piping systems
- Supervise outsourced piping engineering work when necessary to ensure quality and compliance
- Create or review project-specific Design Basis documents based on applicable codes, client specifications, and company scope
- Perform or verify pipe stress analysis considering all design loads and combinations according to the Design Basis
- Provide piping load data to structural engineers for integrated design coordination
- Review as-built drawings and revalidate calculations to ensure conformity with project requirements
- Serve as primary client contact during review meetings, addressing inquiries and concerns professionally and promptly
- Deliver technical support during construction by responding to RFIs and resolving site installation and commissioning issues
- Attend job site visits, project meetings, and commissioning activities to ensure smooth project execution
- Apply advanced mechanical engineering knowledge and experience to independently resolve complex technical challenges
Required competencies and certifications
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related fields (Industrial Engineering, Mechatronics)
- Minimum 7 years of mechanical design and engineering experience focused on data center infrastructure
- Proficiency in mechanical and piping system design, layout, routing, and specialty components
- Strong knowledge of piping and fire suppression system design and construction
- Familiarity with industry standards and codes including AISI, ANSI, ASME (B&PV Section VIII, IX, B31.3), ASTM, AWS, IBC, MFMA, MSS, OSHA, NACE, NFPA, and PFI
- Experience with computer-aided design (CAD) tools and software
- Mastery of Microsoft Office 365 Suite, PDF editors, and operational knowledge of SAP, SolidWorks, Autodesk Revit, BIM 360, AutoCAD, Navisworks Manager/Freedom, and CAESAR II
- Fluency in English, both written and verbal, to effectively communicate complex technical information and collaborate with cross-functional teams
Preferred competencies and qualifications
- Professional Engineering License (strongly preferred)
- Experience with fast-track design/build projects or significant upgrade projects
- Basic understanding of electrical equipment and system design within data centers affecting mechanical scope
