Role Overview
The Senior Choreographer leads the artistic direction, design, and execution of dance routines and staged movement for live performances and entertainment productions. This role manages rehearsals, mentors dancers, collaborates with creative and technical teams, and ensures all choreography is performed to the highest artistic, synchronized, and safety standards.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
Artistic Creation & Choreography Design
- Conceptualise, create, and adapt original dance choreography and movement sequences aligned with show themes and musical scores.
- Develop dynamic staging, blocking, formations, and transitions for soloists, ensembles, and featured performers.
- Incorporate artistic feedback from directors, producers, and show managers to refine and elevate performance quality.
Rehearsal Direction & Performer Training
- Plan, direct, and manage daily rehearsal schedules to teach choreography and clean routines.
- Lead warm-up sessions, technique drills, and conditioning to prevent performer injuries and ensure physical readiness.
- Provide continuous feedback, coaching, and performance critiques to achieve precision, synchronization, and expressive delivery across the cast.
- Select, train, and integrate dance captains, understudies, and replacement performers to ensure operational readiness.
Production & Stage Coordination
- Collaborate with costume designers, lighting technicians, audio engineers, and stage managers to integrate movement seamlessly with technical elements.
- Ensure dance movements accommodate stage dimensions, costume constraints, props, and safety parameters.
- Supervise stage floor runs, cue transitions, and dress rehearsals, making real-time adjustments as necessary.
Auditions & Talent Management
- Lead auditions, talent casting, and skill assessments to select dancers and performers for upcoming productions.
- Monitor cast attendance, punctuality, and discipline during rehearsals and live show seasons.
- Ensure all rehearsal and stage practices strictly comply with venue workplace safety and health standards.
Requirements
- Extensive professional background as a Choreographer, Dance Captain, or Lead Performer in live theatre, entertainment venues, or commercial productions.
- Strong mastery across multiple dance styles (e.g., contemporary, commercial, jazz, theatrical, or traditional styles relevant to the venue).
- Proven experience teaching, directing, and cleaning complex routines for large ensemble casts.
- Strong communication, leadership, and rehearsal management abilities.
- Flexibility to work irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, and public holidays, aligned with production schedules.
